We are the Christa Maria — a former cargo ship from 1961, once filled with fertilizer and grain on the waters heading to France, now awakened as a floating home. We, Robert and Christa, didn’t fall for a yacht or a houseboat, but for a small monument of iron and stories. A spits barge. Original. 39.5 meters. With history in every rivet.
Our adventure began in 2023, and honestly: it started at the same time as us as a couple. Our love and this ship ran in sync from day one. We didn’t even want to look at anything else. It had to be a classic cargo ship. Something with soul, weight, past. Something you don’t “own” but carefully steward.
The ship was then still called Land van Goesting. We’re not sailing it into anonymity, but back into life. On April 4, 2025, we officially gave her her new name: Christa Maria, her seventh life. No longer to carry cargo, but the future. No longer a workhorse, but a home.
Since then, we’ve been building her with the hands of Talsma and SRF and our minds into a high-end floating houseboat, fully self-sufficient, ready for both Amsterdam and the German and French canals. We chose not to shorten her. 39.5 meters stayed 39.5 meters. Because authenticity never happens by accident. Even the entire underside of the ship has been renewed. Where this ship once carried cargo, dreams, dinners, conversations that last deep into the night will soon lie.
